The Republic of **Salishia** [Say-Lish-E-uh] is a nation settled in [[elysia]], itself primarily bordering Ponurvia to its south. Featuring the Columbia, Snake, and Duwamish rivers going throughout Its territory. It hosts the Aquilo Mountains and the Northern Rapids. The Salishian government structure is based on classical liberalism, furthering to create a constitutional republic. The purpose of the government is to serve as a limited entity acting by the consent of those it governs. Its sole, main function is to protect the natural rights of individuals, primarily life, liberty, and property; as well as the individuals themselves. The state hosts a free market and economy, allowing for people to pursue their own individual goals with limited intervention.

## Etymology

The first recognized usage of the words “Republic of Salishia” before its official formation was recognized in a 1822 letter from an early congressman writing the constitution, the letter states, “To govern these lands efficiently, a republic must be made. To ensure the prosperity of man with man, the Republic of Salishia must be in order.”

## History

### Native Era

Early settlements in the area of Salishia largely involved the rivers and vast timber, with different groups settling upon namely The Snake River, The Columbia River, and The Duwamish River. These natives were the most notable, however others lived in the vast forests, using the large trees for shelter. Historians struggle to agree on native populations, settlements, etc.

### Reforged Wonder

The Black Plague hit the region hard, wiping out tons of unsuspecting tribes. People from [[evria]] and east Elysia fled to the west, unknowingly bringing the virus with them. Through the endless tears and graves, the Chinook tribe used the opportunity, uniting the many tribes under one banner through the agony. Uniting under one currency, they reformed the water trade across the region, with many large port cities being established.

### Reforged Wonder

Foreign influence and culture began infiltrating the region, as traders across the world went and left the trade hub. Beaver fur became highly valuable, with hunting picking up pace as the popularity rose. The timber industry as well began picking up pace astronomically, the massive trees grew right down to the water’s edge along the rivers. This meant logs could be easily sent directly into the water and floated to mills for use. Farming took a turn for the better, as the fertile land and dazzling lakes and oceans turned the region into an agricultural powerhouse.

Inspection into the Northern Rapids revealed large amounts of coal in the mountains, massive porphyry copper deposits were found, also including gold, silver, and zinc.

### The Salish Trail

Word of the growing industry of the area eventually spread across Elysia, with nearly half a million settlers crossing the dangerous, unclaimed territories, many dying on the trip.

Upon arrival, many found what they were looking for. Fertile farmland, vast and growing coastal communities, sprawling mountains filled with resources. The region flourished from there, the republic being fully established on the 14th of August, 1896.

## Military

The Armed Forces of the Republic of Salishia are responsible for defending the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and constitutional order of the nation against all foreign threats. The military exists solely for the defense of the Republic and shall remain subordinate to civilian authority at all times.

Supreme command of the military branches is vested in the President, who fulfills the role of Commander-in-Chief. Concurrent oversight remains with the National Congress, which maintains the exclusive power to sanction declarations of war, direct financial appropriations, and establish regulatory frameworks for all military operations.

The republic's defense infrastructure is categorized into the following primary divisions:

**Salishian Army** – Responsible for protecting the nation's territorial sovereignty and executing land-based combat operations.

**Salishian Navy** – Charged with protecting maritime assets, territorial waters, and projecting naval power during overseas missions.

**Salishian Air Force** – Responsible for ensuring aerial dominance and providing strategic support and defense.

**Salishian National Guard** – A specialized reserve force utilized for domestic security, emergency response, and supplemental defense during times of crisis or national emergency.

Service within these forces is governed strictly by constitutional principles. All personnel are tasked with allegiance to the state and uphold the republic's foundational laws throughout their service.

## Government

### Elections

Presidential elections in Salishia involve an altered two round system, the first election involves every major party, with each having a candidate. Whichever two candidates receive the most endorsements from the districts, move to the second and final round. The final round consists of both candidates campaigning fiercely to win over the voters whose preferred candidates were just eliminated. Then on the final election night, the candidate who wins the most districts is declared the winner.

Congressional elections involve the many districts, each having their own downsized elections, with several candidates possibly in the running. Each district holds two separate elections, ultimately electing two representatives to the National Congress. Such representatives are tasked with the duty of serving their district, and working for the overall benefit of the country.

To add on a small note, the government is centralized.

### Legislative Branch

The National Congress is the main bulk of the Legislative branch of the government, hosted in the main chamber of the Legislative Building. The National Congress serves as the sole legislative body of the Republic of Salishia. Representatives are elected by the people from districts across the nation and are entrusted with proposing, debating, amending, and voting on legislation. Any member of Congress may introduce a bill, which is then referred to the appropriate non-partisan committee for review. Following committee consideration, the bill is presented before the congress for debate. Legislation is passed by a majority vote and is then forwarded to the President for approval or veto. If Congress believes the President's objections are unwarranted, it may reconsider the bill. Should two-thirds of all Representatives vote to override the veto, the legislation becomes law without the President's approval. Such ensures that neither Congress nor the President possesses complete control over legislation.

In the case of a national emergency, the National Congress retains its legislative authority and serves as a constitutional check upon emergency powers exercised by the President. Congress may authorize emergency funding, pass temporary legislation, approve declarations of war, mobilization measures, disaster relief efforts, and other actions to preserve public safety and national security. Any emergency measures enacted by Congress or the Executive Branch remain subject to constitutional limitations and review via the Supreme Court.

### Executive Branch

The Executive Branch is responsible for enforcing and administering the laws of the Republic of Salishia. The head of the branch is the President, who also serves as both Head of State and Head of Government. The President is elected by the people through a nationwide popular election and exercises only powers granted by the Constitution. As the President, he administers the national government and ensures the uniform execution of law throughout the Republic.

The President is aided by a cabinet of the heads of the executive departments. The departments vary on several key issues and subjects, varying from economical, environmental, defense, etc. These officials are appointed by the President and are responsible for overseeing their respective areas of government administration, giving the president aid and communication on issues and such.

The President also signs legislation passed by the National Congress into law or rejects it through the veto process. The Executive Branch is subject to constitutional oversight by the Legislative and judicial branches, ensuring a separation of powers and preventing the concentration of authority in any single branch of government.

### Judicial Branch

The Judicial Branch is responsible for interpreting the laws of the Republic of Salishia, resolving disputes, and ensuring that all laws and government actions comply with the Constitution and interests of the people. It acts independently of the Legislative and Executive Branches to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of citizens.

The judiciary consists of Local Courts, Regional Courts, and the Supreme Court of Salishia. Local Courts handle the majority of civil and criminal cases. Regional Courts hear appeals from Local Courts and oversee the administration of justice within their respective districts. The Supreme Court of Salishia is the highest court in the nation and possesses the authority to review the constitutionality of laws and government actions.

## Economy

The Republic of Salishia operates under a free-market capitalist economy based on the principles of classical liberalism. Private enterprise, property rights, and limited government intervention form the foundation of the nation's economic system.

Salishia's economy is supported by its abundant natural resources, strategic coastline, and extensive river systems. Major industries include manufacturing, forestry, agriculture, commercial fishing, mining, energy production, and maritime trade. The Columbia, Snake, and Duwamish Rivers serve as vital transportation and trade routes, while hydroelectric power contributes significantly to the nation's energy supply.

The work force of Salishia faces dwindling workers rights, although they have never lost the freedom to bring upon a worker union and demand better conditions, no such ones have grown nationwide.

## Geography

The Republic of Salishia is situated in the northwestern region of the continent of Elysia, bordering Ponurvia to the south and the ocean to the west. The landscape is characterized by a diverse range of geographical features, including vast coastlines, temperate rainforests, fertile river valleys, mountain ranges, and expansive inland plains.

The Aquilo Mountains extend across much of the country's interior, dividing the humid western lowlands from the drier eastern regions. Numerous rivers traverse the Republic, most notably the Columbia, Snake, and Duwamish Rivers, which have historically served as vital corridors for transportation, commerce, agriculture, and settlement. The Northern Rapids form one of the nation's most key natural landmarks and contribute significantly to regional mineral and mining production.

Salishia experiences a varied climate. The western coastal regions are characterized by mild temperatures, abundant rainfall, and dense coniferous forests, while the interior valleys and eastern plains experience warmer summers, colder winters, and a comparatively drier climate. The country's fertile soils and extensive freshwater resources support a productive agricultural sector alongside vast timberlands.

## Demographics

### Ethnic Groups

Although the Republic of Salishia aims to promote heavy tourism and foreign funding, many of the native populations who once lived on the lands remain. Although they have been persecuted, with many given the chance to convert to the Salishian majority, or face possible relocation or in extreme cases, exile.

Many foreign settlers who move to Salishia are considered Salishian, however the settlers bring their religions, causing Salishia to be a cesspool of several religions, the big three remaining Nazarism, Atheism, and the native religions.

### Citizenship

Granted via the “Birthright Act of 1901”, all people born in the territory of Salishia are granted citizenship and its full benefits. However, with that, comes the issue that citizenship can be lawfully revoked at any time, if given proper justification.

The Birthright Act was passed in hopes of raising the population, therefore, the economy. However it is also abused against the natives, with the government using it as loose justification for further persecution.
