## Etymology

Karjania comes from the Proto-Routan word for livestock and cattle, "Karja". Originally, the word “Karjani” was used to describe specifically the Routan People. Over time, it came to mean all ethnicities living within the Karjan Confederation. Early written sources from the 1500’s describe “The Land of Carajania” as a northern nation full of beastly men. In 1920, the demonym for a citizen of Karjania was changed from “Karjan” to “Karjanian”. Most languages refer to Karjania as “Karjan” in some form. The literal meaning of Karjania is “land of cattle”.

## History

The land that is now Karjania was inhabited by various early tribes around 7500 BCE. The era between 5000 BCE and 800 CE is referred to as “**Ancient Karjania**” by Karjanian scholars. Around 800 CE, Proto-Routan Tribes began to arrive in what is now known as Karjania.

In 1477, the 3 kingdoms and their leaders signed the Treaty of Roudanjärvi, which established the **Karjan Confederation**, uniting the 3 nations into a single state. The Karjan Confederation was an electoral monarchy; a group of 50 nobles would vote for a King, who would then reign until their deaths. The first king of the Confederation was King Carl I of Karjania. During this period, [will talk with Rudania for lore here]. In 1778, Olaf Virtanen was elected King, with the name Olaf IV. This caused discontent among the general population and especially within the military, leading to a coup by several soldiers and the proclamation of the First Karjanian Republic. This period lasted between 1778 and 1781 and was known as the Age of the Republic **.** After the death of the Military Leader in 1781, the nobles reclaimed power and elected young Kristian IV, also known as Kristian the Great. He is the longest-reigning monarch in Karjanian history, ruling for over 55 years between 1781 and 1837. He was the first recorded Karjanian to live over 100 years, dying at 102. The period between 1782 and 1882 is known as the Golden 100 Years. This era included the development and financing of the arts, an improving literacy rate, and a growing number of non-religious people. Several new buildings and universities were constructed, and the Confederation adopted a new anthem, “Maamme”.

On November 17th, 1920, King Kristian V died after a reign of 43 years, triggering a chain of events. This was the spark that ignited the Karjanian Civil War. Soon after, Yrjö Sinnar declared the Pietari Commune, and socialists took control of the capital. In Roudanjärvi, the 2nd Karjanian Republic was declared by Heikki Aaltonen, a noble on the former council of electors. Soon after, Yrjö Sinnar declared the establishment of the United Socialist States of Karjania and declared war on the rest of the country, officially starting the civil war on January 8th, 1920. In Toksavaara, the Free Esti State declared independence, while in Murmánska, the Saamit Socialist State (S.S.S.) was created. After roughly 8 months of fighting and over 100,000 casualties, the Aaltonnen surrendered and were executed, along with 724 other government members and generals. After the conquest of the Free Esti State, the S.S.S. and the U.S.S.K. united into a single entity, establishing the Karjanian Communist Congress.

## Military

The Karjanian Defense Forces (Karjanmaan Puolustusvoimat) are the military armed forces of Karjania. It consists of the Karjanian army, the Karjanian Navy, the Karjanian Air Force, and the Karjanian Border Guard.

Its history goes back to the 1782 Constitution, which established a policy of conscription for all fit men after their 20th birthday. The mandatory conscription period is 300 days. The Karjanian Defense Forces have fought in the [[great-war|Great War]]. The Karjanian Army is headquartered in Pietari, the Navy in Arkankeli, the Air Force in Roudanjärvi, and the Border Guard in Nowgorod. Their main strategy is to use Karjania's forests and lakes as an advantage and ambush their enemies.

The Military has around 100,000 soldiers during peace times; in times of war, the state can conscript up to 1,000,000. The terrain and climate of Karjania make it difficult to conquer. The equipment of the Karjanian Military is somewhat outdated and in short supply. It mostly produces its own equipment instead of purchasing from others.

## Government

Karjania is a one-party communist dictatorship with de facto no elections. All power is in the hands of the Karjanian Communist Party. The Chairman of the Karjanian Communist Party and leader of Karjania is Yrjö Sinnar, a socialist who orchestrated the revolution. The Karjanian Communist Congress is the USSK's main governing body. It has 200 members, all of whom are members of the Karjanian Communist Party. Elections are held every 5 years, but anyone found voting for a non-Communist party is at risk of going to prison or a labor camp. The Judiciary Body of the USSK is the Karjanian Supreme Court, founded in 1920. There are 19 government ministers who are de facto the only ones allowed to make independent decisions within the government.

Karjania is divided into 27 Administrative Divisions, including Counties, States, Territories and Cities. Each Subdivision is further divided into 100 electoral areas. Alongside this, subdivisions are also divided into districts. Each elected representative will go to the Karjanian Communist Congress. Schools are state-owned.

The Karjanian Communist Congress has 10 minority representatives from 5 ethnicities: Helkans, the Esti, the Sammit, [[rudanians]], and Thuleans.

The remaining 90 seats are divided by the total number of votes each party receives. The Karjanian Communist Congress is held on the 5th and 20th of every month.

## Economy

Karjania operates a planned economy due to its socialist views. The state owns all industry and businesses, as private ownership of property is outlawed. The Karjanian Ministry of Economics is responsible for decision-making on production. Agricultural land was seized and made state property following the Civil War. Karjania has a GDP of $ 833,668,445,000 and a GDP per capita of $45,399. Its currency is the Karjania markka (Mk), introduced in 1887. The main economic center of Karjania is Pietari, with other significant industries in Roudanjärvi and Arkankeli. Karjania has a large lumber industry, along with mines and factories.

Karjania's overseas territories and colonies contribute significantly to its economy. Cuohpajálla is used for coal mining, while the Frederikka Islands have a large fishing industry. Tourism to Karjania is heavily limited to only people from select countries. Karjania has many notable companies, most of which are headquartered in Pietari.
